Molds (fungi) are part of the natural environment, found virtually everywhere outdoors. The spores enter through windows and doors, on clothing, hair, and fur. When conditions deteriorate because of excess moisture, leaks, floods, spores can multiply and become a problem causing odor and visible damage to building materials.
Exposures are unavoidable, but in most cases harmless. Don’t be misled by alarmists claiming that mold is “toxic”. This is very rare. Mold infections are relatively uncommon. Allergic effects of mold such as hay fever (rhinitis), allergy-induced asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, aspergillosis/mycosis, and sinus inflammation are the real issues.
Testing commonly reveals spores of Cladosporium, Ascomycetes (mold cousins), and Basidiomycetes outdoors. Common “indoor” molds include Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Cladosporium.
